Shorin Ryu Karate (ages 13 and up)
Shorin Ryu Karate, an Okinawan martial arts form, is a traditional martial art developed as a weaponless method of self-defense. Developed by Sokon "Bushi" Matsumura during the 1800s, Matsumura Orthodox, also known as Matsumura Seito Ha or Sukunai Hayashi, is a traditional style of Okinawan Karate. It combines elements of the traditional Okinawan fighting styles Shuri-te and Tomari-te, two major regions in Okinawa. Because of its effectiveness it was used by Okinawan warriors who served as bodyguards to the Kings of Okinawa. Shorin Ryu Karate combines blocks, punches, strikes, and kicks into an Okinawan fighting style. Students defend themselves against various attacks using basic principles such as blocks, parries, punches, open hand strikes, elbows, takedowns, kicking techniques and various katas. Through the process of learning self-defense techniques, our students develop strength, increase endurance, confidence, and self-esteem.
